Atmospheric gravity waves

gravity waves

What have we here?

This is one of the first photos ever from my Nikon D40. It was taken through the window of a BC Ferry on the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo run early one morning in January of 2007. As you've probably guessed from the faint glow in the distance, the view is facing east. Off image to the left are Vancouver's North Shore mountains. Along the skyline on the right you can just make out the shapes of several buildings on the campus of the University of British Columbia. The bands of cloud across the top of the image are evidence that there are vertical oscillations in the air density taking place. These oscillations are known as "gravity" or "mountain" waves. The cloud patterns are caused by density and temperature variations that are just in the right range to allow local condensation conditions to occur in only some parts of the full wave cycle.
